Straw Craft

 Straw Craft

Beautiful traditional and contemporary designs inspired by the history of rural traditions, and Cornwall's celtic history, made from heritage wheat straw and rye.

Traditional cottage industry, now an endangered rural craft

Straw Craft makes an unusual gift, whether of traditional or contemporary design. Much better than imported flowers out of season!

Traditional designs for house blessings, weddings, anniversaries, and seasonal holidays through the year. Contemporary designs look stunning as wall, door and mirror decorations, and can substitute for anywhere you might use a wreath.

If handled carefully and kept dry, the pieces will last for years but when its life is done, all materials used are biodegradable and compostable with the exception of a small amount of wire in some designs (recycle with scrap metal or repurpose).

Not only do you buy a wonderful piece of craft work, but you support a small rural business, the continuation of an endangered traditional craft, and the growing of heritage wheat and rye.

All of our straw products are handmade in Cornwall at Beanie Farm. Commission accepted.

We do not ship outside the UK unless by special arrangement (email for details).

Saint Brigid's cross - £20 (plus £6 p&p)

The four armed cross shape is known in prehistoric European art, but also used in festival marking the end of winter and the opening of spring on the 1st February, Imbolc (or Oimelc) pronounced ‘imolk’ or ‘imelk’, which became associated with Saint Brigid (or Bridget, Bride, Brighid). A cross would be made as a sign of welcome for Saint Brigid.  This festival is certainly pre-Christian, and behind Saint Brigid is a pagan goddess of the same or similar name, considered a pan-Celtic deity.

The crosses were typically left up for a year to protect the house, and replaced on the next Saint Brigid’s eve.

Whatever your beliefs, or none, this large stunning Brigid’s Cross makes an unusual door wreath, wall hanging, or traditional symbol of spring.
